The abbesses of Essen had coins minted as early as the 11th century.
The first gold coin minted in Essen was the "Borbecker Gulden", named after the place of minting, Borbeck Castle, which was minted under Abbess Sophie von Gleichen in the middle of the 15th century. One side of our guilder is a copy of this coin and shows St. John.
The further conversion went like this:
1 guilder = 20 albus
1 albus = 2 shillings
1 shilling = 6 pennies
1 penny = 1 heller
For the equivalent of one guilder, a craftsman could pay rent for a year. For two gulden a farmer could buy 5 cows.
Our "Essener Gulden" is simply delicious!
